This “Island Retreat” captures the serene solitude of the secluded beaches on Naxos Island, just south of Plaka. I visited Naxos in 2025 for a photography and Plein Air painting trip. In this painting, a simple stone house is perched on a sun-warmed hillside overlooking the Aegean sea. I created a gentle path from the dwelling down to the shore, where I imagined a quiet morning ritual of bringing an Americano coffee down to the water’s edge. What a way to start the day! The vast, empty horizon, tranquil water, and barely inhabited landscape capture the profound peace of this remote corner of Naxos. I wanted to create a painting where the viewer could imagine themselves, escaping from a more hectic world.
